Leroy Lettering Set with Varigraph
contributed by Lou

The Leroy Lettering Set from Keuffel & Esser Co. was a marvel in its day. Most all EC and Classics Illustrated comics were lettered with this. The letters were singularly traced from the Leroy with a stylus, at the same time reproducing an exact duplicate of each letter on the drawing paper. An experienced speedy user could really set the woods on fire with this! The Varigraph, upper left (also shown elsewhere here in the Typography category), allowed the user to distort the Leroy characters in all kinds of ways, such as scale and skew. It was pretty much an early mechanical version of the "transform" tool that all we Photoshoppers now know so well. Thanks to Worthopedia for saving this image from its original ebay post.
